Cultural Workshop - Suksma - Balinese Ritual Food and Celebration
Recounting our experience of Mbweni Clean Project's first beach cleanup, where our dedication met with the determination to create a cleaner, greener future for Mbweni Bay and beyond.
On the sunny Saturday of February 3rd, 2024, Mbweni Ruins & Gardens welcomed guests to embark on a cultural odyssey at Suksma: Balinese Ritual, Food & Celebration, as part of our Weekly Community Lunch program.
Led by Sasha, our very own team member and a passionate ambassador of Indonesian culture, the event kicked off with a captivating Balinese Offerings Workshop and presentation, known as Canang Sari. Attendees were immersed in the beauty of Balinese traditions as Sasha provided insights into Balinese culture, the significance of offerings, and an introduction to Hinduism practices.
Canang Sari (the offering), made from flowers, coconut tree leaves, is a daily offering expressing gratitude to God for the world's peace. Found in Balinese temples and homes, it's an integral part of Balinese culture. With flowers and coconut leaves sourced from our very own gardens, our community members then eagerly crafted their own Canang Sari.
The workshop culminated in a heartfelt ceremony surrounded by the serene beauty of Mbweni Botanical Gardens, where attendees expressed their thanks to nature by placing their finished offerings beneath the shade of a tree.
Following the workshop, guests indulged in an Indonesian Lunch Buffet at our beachside restaurant overlooking the mesmerizing seaside. The buffet featured a tantalizing array of authentic Indonesian cuisine, showcasing the diverse flavors and textures of the archipelago.
From the refreshing Urap Salad bursting with coconut dressing to the crispy symphony of Bakwan, vegetable fritters, the menu delighted taste buds with every bite. Highlights included succulent Chicken Satay served with a luscious peanut sauce, as well as comforting desserts like Kolak, a traditional Indonesian sweet stew, and Kue Serabi, a delightful rice flour cake infused with coconut and palm sugar.
